Giroud captured discussing Timo Werner’s miss in tunnel footage

Timo Werner’s miss inside the first 10 minutes of Chelsea vs Real Madrid could prove costly ahead of the tie’s second leg.

Chelsea squandered a number of chances in the first half and the German’s close range effort was the pick of the bunch. Christian Pulisic, who had a terrific game, put in on a plate for Werner from six yards who could only strike the ball straight at Thibaut Courtois.

Anywhere else and the former Chlesea shot-stopper wouldn’t have stood a chance.

Olivier Giroud, who perhaps didn’t have the luxury of replays from his position, was suitably impressed by Courtois’ save and praised the Real Madrid No.1 in the players’ tunnel at half-time, as per RMC Sport.

“The save on Timo! pffff,” he told the Belgian.

But Courtois played down his role in the event by simply stating he casually stuck out his leg.

“All I did was put my foot like this,” he replied.

Thankfully for Werner, Pulisic opened the scoring shortly after. The United States international expertly dispatched his chance and put the visitors ahead.

Sadly for Thomas Tuchel, though, Karim Benzema levelled the scoreline and that’s how it remained until the final whistle.

And with the chances missed by the Blues in the first half it’s a case of what might have been for the German.

Tuchel was not ignorant to the miss and was critical of his striker after the game.

“He missed a big one at West Ham and now he’s missed a big one here, that does not help,” he said.

“But it doesn’t help crying about it or regretting it all the time.

“There are millions of people who have harder things to deal with than chances that you miss. So the good thing about sport is that no one cares tomorrow, today we were sad and angry in the moment – this is normal. He is sad, he is angry and disappointed.

“Tomorrow he has a free day and the next day he must put his chin up. He’s a top guy, a professional guy.

“He works hard. He’s in the positions. He will not stop believing. Everyone accepts the situation like it is. With strikers, if you score the next game, nobody speaks.”
